Matt
Internet television, the Reece's Peanut Butter Cup of the media world. A great combination that has yet to be done right. Sure, I've hooked up my laptop to the ole TV to try watching Hulu, but I always struggled to get the resolution just right, the damn screen would shut off during long programs, and when I wanted to browse for new shows I had to hunch in front of the television and type like a primate. Not exactly an ideal viewing experience.
Sort of like Tivo on steriods, Google TV provides a television friendly interface to access content stored on the internet. Here is the video from Google if you haven't seen it already:
Google will be partnering with Sony (for the TVs), Intel (for the processors), and Logitech (for the remotes, keyboards, and boxes). I think this is a BIG step in the evolution of TV, but here are a few lingering thoughts I have on the subject.
Remote Control Harmony
Logitech will be leveraging their Harmony remote technology to navigate Google TV; However, it will be custom tailored for the Google TV experience combining a compact keyboard, remote control and touchpad. You can also turn your Android phone into another remote by downloading a GTV app.
I'm really excited about this shift in the way we interact with our TVs, because most if not all cable companies' on demand interfaces are crap. I enjoy using the Wiimote to find movies and shows on Netflix, so I'm excited to see how remote controls will evolve and use motion or voice commands.
Someone's gotta do it...
New Audience & Revenue Streams
As an online content producer, I'm excited by the potential to reach an even larger (and possibly more sedentary) viewing audience. If independent content producers are able to draw in larger audiences and better monetize their videos, imagine what this will do to video production value and content quality. Networks will be forced to compete with independent content producers with no home court advantage. Why watch the news when you can watch "Autotune the News" ?
This could completely remove the middle man and allow great, independently produced content to reach a mainstream audience. With all this awesome new content available at the click of a button (or swipe of a finger) maybe people will stop watching crappy reality shows. Wouldn't it be great if internet TV actually killed reality shows ?
Your Move, Apple
Steve Jobs referred to Apple TV as a hobby, but I think that's going to change. When asked if Google had leapfrogged Apple, Steve Jobs replied, "Not a chance" and flew off into the clouds on rocket shoes controlled by an iPad (I'm guessing about the last part).
Apple TV is currently a more expensive, pay-as-you-go version of Netflix. Not very exciting.
I imagine a new Apple TV will integrate iPhones and iPads into the mix to not only control on screen actions, but interact with content as you watch it. Imagine searching for shows or movies on an iPad and then flicking it towards the television where it pops up and begins playing. Television commercials could be replaced with interactive iAds. I may just be speculating, but there are going to be some exciting changes coming for the television in the new few years.
How do you see internet TV being different ?
